It is not only the most difficult thing to know oneself,
but also the most inconvenient one too.
H W Shaw
To be a better person takes courage and a little bit of hard work. It means being brutally honest with ourselves.
It is easy to manipulate ourselves and be dishonest about our happiness, state of mind or sometimes exaggerating the truth or omitting a fact about something important to ourselves. The good news is that it is not that difficult to change. We can change this way of thinking and behaving and become honest. Honest about our shortcomings, proud of our achievements and content with the person we really are. We do not have to put ourselves down, be martyrs, be a show off or have unrealistic expectations of ourselves. Becoming honest people does not mean we are going to beat ourselves up, it is the exact opposite. We love ourselves enough to take responsibility for things that we have previously not tackled, ignored or have not been honest about.
When the facts are staring us in the face, lets embrace them and accept them. Lets begin our plan of action just like it is quoted in the famous Serenity Prayer, we need to “change the things we can, accept the things we cannot and have the wisdom to know the difference.” If we know we need to loose weight or end a friendship that is toxic and has been making us unhappy or if we can no longer attend party, we will be honest and address these issues. We won’t be sweeping them under the carpet any longer.
One issue at a time, we set realistic goals, be gentle with ourselves, keep focused on self love & self honesty.
