A complete person
People of virtue say many memorable things; but those who say memorable things, are not necessarily virtuous. Benevolent people possess courage; but those with courage are not necessarily benevolent.
There may be wise people who are not benevolent. But foolish people are never benevolent.
If you are poor, it is difficult not to complain of injustice.
But if you are rich, it is even more difficult not to be arrogant.
If you possess wisdom, are free from selfish desires, are courageous, and appreciate music and the other arts, you are a complete person. But a complete person does not need to have all these qualities. If you prefer virtue to profit, and remain virtuous even when poverty befalls you, then you are a complete person.
Speak only when it is time to speak, so people never grow tired of hearing you. Laugh only when there is real humour, so people will laugh with you. Eat only when it is time to eat, so you eat the right amount.
If you lack modesty, you will make claims about yourself that you cannot fulfil.
If you are employed by a man of power, be honest with him. Even when he is annoyed by your words, never cease to be truthful, Then you will render him true service.
